NEET Chemistry · Unit 10 · Inorganic Chemistry

ScoreChemby CSJ Sir
Weightage: 3–4 questions · 12–16 marks

1 · Group 13 (boron family)

Inert pair+1 gains stability down the group: Tl Tl, so TlI TlI

Back-bonding (–) is strongest in BF, so it is the weakest acid.

DiboraneBH: two 3c–2e bridges, four 2c–2e terminal bonds, B is
Boric acidB(OH) + 2HO [B(OH)] + HO (Lewis acid, not a proton donor)
Othersborax NaBO10HO; borazine BNH

2 · Group 14 (carbon family)

Allotropesdiamond ; graphite ; fullerene C
Inert pairPbCl is stable, PbCl is not
CovalencyC max 4; Si can reach 6 (SiF) using -orbitals
Silicones(RSiO) from RSiCl hydrolysis
CObinds Hb about 300 times more strongly than O

3 · Group 15 (nitrogen family)

Nonly : no – bonding; forms – (NN)

Boiling point: NH highest (H-bonding), then SbH AsH PH.

AcidO.S.BasicityP–H
HPO+112
HPO+321
HPO+530
HPO+540

Only those with P–H bonds (HPO, HPO) are reducing.

4 · Phosphorus halides with ROH

5 · Group 16 (oxygen family)

O states; (HO); (OF); (OF)
Hydridesacidity HO HS HSe HTe; bp HS HSe HTe HO
Obent, diamagnetic; oxidises I to I
OxoacidFormulaFeature
SulphurousHSOS–OH ×2, S=O ×1
SulphuricHSOS–OH ×2, S=O ×2
PyrosulphuricHSOS–O–S bridge
PeroxodisulphuricHSOS–O–O–S bridge

Contact process: SO SO over VO; SO in HSO gives oleum.

6 · Group 17 (halogens)

Bond enthalpyCl Br F I
Hydridesacidity HF HCl HBr HI; bp HF highest
OxoacidsHOCl HClO HClO HClO (acid strength)
Cold dil. NaOHX X + OX
Hot conc. NaOHX X + XO
ShapesClF T-shaped (, 2 lp); BrF square pyramidal; IF pentagonal bipyramidal

7 · Group 18 (noble gases)

BartlettXe + PtF Xe[PtF]
SpecieslpHybrid.Shape
XeF3linear
XeF2square planar
XeF1distorted octahedral
XeO1pyramidal
XeOF1square pyramidal

Seen in NEET 2023

Stability: TlCl vs TlCl, InI vs InI, TlI vs TlI?

Inert pair: Tl is more stable than Tl, so TlI TlI.

8 · Nitrogen chemistry

HaberN + 3H 2NH (Fe, about 700 K, 200 atm)
Ostwald4NH + 5O 4NO + 6HO (Pt/Rh)
2NO + O 2NO; 3NO + HO 2HNO + NO
Cu + HNOconc. gives NO; dilute gives NO
PClsolid is [PCl][PCl]

Seen in NEET 2026

ClF: Cl has 3 bond pairs and 2 lone pairs ().

Lone pairs sit equatorial, so the shape is bent T-shaped.

Seen in NEET 2022

Diborane: each B is . Two orbitals make terminal 2c–2e bonds, two make bridge 3c–2e bonds.

Six traps to remember

  1. Oxygen is not always : in OF, in OF, in peroxides.
  2. Nitrogen cannot form – bonds: it has no -orbitals.
  3. Boron in diborane is , not .
  4. BF is the weakest Lewis acid of the boron trihalides.
  5. PCl + ROH gives HPO; PCl + ROH gives POCl.
  6. Carboxyhaemoglobin is about 300 times more stable than oxyhaemoglobin.
