Coordination Compounds: one-page cheat sheet

NEET Chemistry · Unit 12 · Inorganic Chemistry

ScoreChemby CSJ Sir
Weightage: 3–4 questions · 12–16 marks

1 · Werner's theory

Primaryionisable; equals the oxidation state
Secondarynon-ionisable; equals the coordination number
ComplexAgClIons
[Co(NH)]Cl34
[Co(NH)Cl]Cl23
[Co(NH)Cl]Cl12
[Co(NH)Cl]00

Only Cl outside the bracket precipitates. A double salt (Mohr's salt) gives all its ions in water; a complex keeps its coordination entity.

2 · Ligands

UnidentateCl, HO, NH, CN
Didentateen, oxalate (ox), glycinate (gly)
Polydentatedien (3); EDTA (6: 2 N + 4 O)
AmbidentateNO (N or O); SCN (S or N)
Homolepticone kind of ligand: [Co(NH)]
Heterolepticmore than one kind: [Co(NH)Cl]

Chelate rings of 5 or 6 members make a complex more stable (chelate effect).

3 · IUPAC naming

Ordercation first, then anion; ligands alphabetical, then metal
Anionic ligandends in -ido: chlorido, cyanido; neutral: ammine, aqua, carbonyl
Multipliersdi, tri; bis, tris for complex ligands
Anionic complexmetal ends in -ate: ferrate, cuprate, argentate, aurate
Oxidation no.Roman numeral in brackets

[Ag(HO)][Ag(CN)] is diaquasilver(I) dicyanidoargentate(I).

4 · Isomerism

TypeExample
Ionisation[Co(NH)Br]SO / [Co(NH)SO]Br
Hydrate[Cr(HO)]Cl / [CrCl(HO)]Cl·HO
Coordination[Co(NH)][Cr(CN)] / [Cr(NH)][Co(CN)]
Linkage[Co(NH)NO]Cl / [Co(NH)ONO]Cl
Geometricalcis/trans (MAB square planar); fac/mer (MAB)
Optical[Co(en)], cis-[CoCl(en)]

trans-[CoCl(en)] has a mirror plane: optically inactive. Tetrahedral complexes show no geometrical isomerism.

5 · Oxidation state & coordination number

ComplexO.S.C.N.
K[Fe(CN)]+26
[Co(en)]Cl+36
[Pt(NH)Cl]+24
[Cu(NH)]SO+24

C.N. counts donor atoms, so each en adds 2.

6 · Valence bond theory

ComplexHybrid.ShapeUnp.
[Co(NH)]octahedral0
[CoF]octahedral4
[Ni(CN)]sq. planar0
[NiCl]tetrahedral2
[Ni(CO)]tetrahedral0
[Fe(CO)]trig. bipyramidal0

7 · Crystal field theory

Octahedral at ; at
low spin (strong field), electrons pair in
high spin (weak field)

is always small, so tetrahedral complexes are nearly always high spin.

8 · Colour

Origin– transition; the colour seen is complementary to the light absorbed
Ti aqua[Ti(HO)] absorbs blue-green, appears violet
Cu aqua[Cu(HO)] absorbs red, appears blue
Colourless and ions (Sc, Zn)

9 · Carbonyls & biology

bondCO lone pair empty metal orbital
back-bondfilled metal CO

M–C bond order rises; C–O bond order falls.

ComplexMetal / use
ChlorophyllMg
HaemoglobinFe
Vitamin BCo
cis-PlatinPt; anticancer
Wilkinson's catalystRh; hydrogenation
EDTAremoves Pb poisoning

Which of the four Co(III) ammine chlorides conducts least in water?

[Co(NH)Cl] is neutral and gives no ions.

Increasing field strength:

Six traps to remember

  1. Only chloride outside the coordination sphere is precipitated by AgNO.
  2. An anionic complex takes -ate (often a Latin stem: ferrate, cuprate, argentate).
  3. [NiCl] is tetrahedral and paramagnetic; [Ni(CN)] is square planar and diamagnetic.
  4. , so tetrahedral complexes are almost always high spin.
  5. cis-[CoCl(en)] is optically active; the trans isomer is not.
  6. In metal carbonyls, back-donation weakens C–O and strengthens M–C.
