Weightage: 3–4 questions · 12–16 marks

1 · Equilibrium constant

Reverse
×
Add equations
(H + I, N + O)
(PCl dissociation)
(N + 3H)

2 · Reaction quotient

CompareResult
forward reaction
at equilibrium
backward reaction

3 · Le Chatelier's principle

ChangeShift
add reactant / remove productforward
add productbackward
increase pressurefewer gas moles
decrease pressuremore gas moles
increase endothermic direction
decrease exothermic direction
catalystno shift; faster approach
inert gas, constant no shift
inert gas, constant more gas moles
Only temperature changes the value of . Concentration, pressure and catalyst do not.

4 · Acids, bases & water

Arrheniusacid gives H, base gives OH
Brønsted–Lowryacid donates H, base accepts; conjugate pair differs by one H
Lewisacid accepts an electron pair (BF, AlCl); base donates one (NH)

rises with , so neutral pH falls below 7 on heating.

5 · Weak electrolytes

Common ionCHCOONa added to CHCOOH lowers , raises pH

6 · Hydrolysis & buffers

Salt ofpH at 298 K
weak acid + strong base
strong acid + weak base
weak acid + weak base
Acidic buffer
Basic buffer
Weak acid + weak base salt: pH does not depend on concentration.

7 · Solubility product

TypeExamples
ABAgCl, BaSO
AB or ABMg(OH), AgCrO
ABFe(OH), Al(OH)
ABAsS
ABZr(PO)
Precipitateswhen ionic product
Group IIHS in dilute HCl: common H keeps low; only CuS, PbS, BiS settle
Group IIINHOH with NHCl: common NH limits ; Fe(OH), Al(OH) settle

8 · Quick pH rules

Strong acid (monoprotic)
Strong base, then
Acid strengthlarger means smaller means stronger acid
Solubilitya common ion lowers the solubility of a sparingly soluble salt

Seen in NEET 2026

Buffer with equal and ; . Find pH.

Seen in NEET 2022

50 mL each of 0.10 M sodium acetate and 0.01 M acetic acid; .

Six traps to remember

  1. Only temperature changes .
  2. : count gas moles only.
  3. means the reaction runs backward.
  4. A catalyst never shifts the equilibrium; it only speeds up reaching it.
  5. Inert gas at constant volume does nothing; at constant pressure it favours more gas moles.
  6. Henderson equation uses ; equal amounts give pH .
