1 · Octet rule & formal charge
Ocentral O ; double-bonded O ; single-bonded O
IncompleteBeH, BF, AlCl (central atom has fewer than 8 electrons)
Odd electronNO, NO
ExpandedPF (10), SF (12): Period 3 onwards, empty -orbitals
The octet rule cannot explain shapes or noble-gas compounds such as XeF, XeF, KrF.
2 · Ionic bond & Fajans' rules
Favoured bylow ionisation enthalpy, high electron gain enthalpy, high lattice enthalpy
Lattice enthalpyenergy to separate 1 mol of crystal into gaseous ions (NaCl: )
| More covalent when | Order |
|---|---|
| small cation | LiCl NaCl KCl |
| large anion | LiI LiBr LiCl LiF |
| high charges | AlCl MgCl NaCl |
| 18-electron cation | Cu, Ag Na, K |
3 · Bond parameters & dipole moment
Bond order
Resonancehybrid is more stable; CO C–O bond order ; O O–O pm
Dipole;
CO, BF, BeF, CH, CCl, SF, XeF, p-dichlorobenzene
NH ( D): lone-pair dipole adds to N–H dipoles. NF ( D): it opposes them.
4 · VSEPR shapes & hybridisation
Repulsion: lp–lp lp–bp bp–bp. Steric number = bonds + lone pairs on the central atom: 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 .
| Type | Hyb. | Shape | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| AB | linear | BeCl, CO | |
| AB | trigonal planar | BF, SO | |
| ABE | bent | SO, O | |
| AB | tetrahedral | CH, NH | |
| ABE | pyramidal | NH (), PCl | |
| ABE | bent | HO () | |
| AB | trigonal bipyramidal | PCl | |
| ABE | see-saw | SF | |
| ABE | T-shaped | ClF, BrF | |
| ABE | linear | XeF, I | |
| AB | octahedral | SF | |
| ABE | square pyramidal | BrF, IF | |
| ABE | square planar | XeF |
In shapes the lone pairs sit in equatorial positions.
5 · and bonds
head-on overlap along the axis; stronger
sideways overlap of parallel -orbitals
C–Cethane ; ethene ; ethyne ; C molecule: two bonds and no bond
square planar, e.g. [Ni(CN)]; and give octahedral
6 · Molecular orbital theory
B, C, N: (2s–2p mixing)
O, F:
| Species | BO | Magnetism | |
|---|---|---|---|
| N | 14 | 3 | diamagnetic |
| O | 15 | 2.5 | paramagnetic |
| O | 16 | 2 | paramagnetic |
| O | 17 | 1.5 | paramagnetic |
| O | 18 | 1 | diamagnetic |
BO (He, Be) means the molecule does not exist. A higher BO gives a shorter bond.
7 · Hydrogen bonding
StrengthF–H···F O–H···O N–H···N
IntermolecularHF, HO, alcohols, p-nitrophenol: raises boiling point and viscosity
Intramolecularo-nitrophenol, salicylaldehyde: lowers boiling point, steam volatile

Which has the maximum lone pair–lone pair repulsion?
Count lone pairs on the central atom: XeF.
Six traps to remember
- Octet rule cannot explain shapes or noble-gas compounds.
- Smaller cation, larger anion, higher charge: more covalent character.
- Lone pairs in shapes go equatorial; XeF is linear.
- for symmetrical molecules; NH has more dipole than NF.
- O is paramagnetic (BO 2.5); BO 0 means no molecule.
- Intramolecular H-bonding lowers boiling point; intermolecular raises it.
